IBM to put $300 million in new data-protection services
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - In an effort to supply its customers with more reliable and safe operational services, IBM Corp. on Wednesday will unveil a $300 million investment to build 13 new service delivery centers worldwide in what the technology giant calls the largest infrastructure investment of its kind.
IBM said the new centers will be built in 10 countries in order to expand the company's offerings in what it called business continuity and resiliency. The centers will use cloud computer technology to back up and deliver information stored on servers to devices that are linked in to the cloud network.
Mike Reigel, IBM's vice president of business continuity and resiliency, said the new investments are aimed at reducing the risk of losing their data in the event of a disaster or emergency.
"There's a tremendous amount of demand for this type of service," Reigel said. "We can help plan for [customers'] activity in a critical situation."
The centers will let IBM customers use cloud computing technology to store their data in "vaults" at the resiliency centers. After the information is protected, a client can use the cloud to recover their information by restoring and retrieving it to the client's business site, in the event of an emergency.
