Cisco Unified Computing: the SOA connection - Commentary by Miko Matsumura
Cisco, LET'S RIDE: Unified Computing
Commentary by Miko MatsumuraCisco today announces their push into server computing…or rather into Unified Computing. I found Cisco’s CTO Padmasree Warrior (I love saying her name, it’s so Power Rangers) to be eloquent in her video.
The Cisco vision of the “Human Network” is easily as big of a jump as Sun’s original “Network is the computer.”
One of the phenomenon we have been seeing in SOA Land which has created a profound challenge has been what I refer to as “Blame-zilla,” the natural tendency for an interdependent graph of network attached nodes to spiral down towards the weakest link. When you consider the OSI 7 layer network model, you begin to realize the depth of the problem, as you tend to cross organizational boundaries as you plumb deeper into the stack. In SOA, we attack this management problem via Service Management and Governance.

From a business perspective, Cisco is taking the Taco Bell approach. 7 Layer burrito!

Despite the derisive image, this makes good sense for Cisco and the industry. Cisco is rounding up a posse to head off HP and IBM at the pass..Network Computing’s Denise Dubie already covered Cisco’s deal with BMC and VMware is in the mix. We also see EMC, Microsoft and Intel supporting.
As Padmasree Warrior says in the closing of her video… The Network is the…. Platform…
My 2 cents,
Miko
