CloudClimate displays monitoring results from a globally distributed installation of PRTG Network Monitor, a network monitoring software from Paessler AG. PRTG works with one core server installation and a number of remote probes used to measure system performance and to remotely monitor performance of network services.

The remote probes for CloudClimate are installed on virtual systems in selected hosting clouds:

How CloudClimate Works

CloudClimate monitors the internal performance of cloud servers by running short load tests for CPU, memory and disks every 5 minutes. Additionally all probe systems (plus the VPS systems mentioned above) send HTTP and PING requests to each other every minute to measure network performance. The results are shown in the graphs on this website.

What We Define As "Cloud Based" Hosting

The term "cloud" or "cloud hosting" has been used in quite different meanings recently. When we talk about "cloud hosting" services here on CloudClimate we mean "Infrastructure in the cloud" or "infrastructure as a service" services according to the definition in the Wikipedia. This includes virtual server offerings that are hosted on automated systems which enable users to quickly create and dismantle servers while at the same time providing higher reliability than pre-cloud VPS hosting offerings (e.g. based on Virtuozzo). Also on-demand CDNs (Content Delivery Networks) are monitored by CloudClimate. More coming soon.
